A baby Rhino was born at Altina Wildlife Park at Darlington Point on 7 January 2026 weighing 65kg.

This baby will be an important addition to the Rhino Conservation efforts and Breeding program throughout Australasia as his mum ‘Tatu’ was imported by Altina from Germany, 10 years ago.

Not only is the first “Rhino success” for Altina, but it is a baby that touches the Altin Family on a much more personal level, too.

Co-Founder of Altina, devoted husband to Gloria and superhero father to Rebecca, Rick and Crystal, the late Gino Altin, was in awe of this species, which was easily his favourite animal.

To honour Gino, he has been named “CK”.

The reason was that Gino was a strong, fair man with a quirky sense of humour who always enjoyed making people laugh. As a family man, he would always tell his family he was Superman in disguise… aka Clark Kent. So, as a family, they felt “CK” captured Gino’s humour and many fond memories.

Little CK who now weighs 93kg in just one month had a rough start to life, with his mum having some complications of her own.

Tatu, though fully recovered now, had a few difficulties in relation to the birth, which in turn led her to decide that motherhood was not for her at this stage.

Despite many attempts to help Tatu accept CK, the decision was made to step in and look after CK on his mother’s behalf.

CK has a lot of growing to do and is currently drinking 18-20 litres of specialised Rhino replacement formula each day, which will increase with his weight over the next 18 months.

CK now has a new paddock friend, an Asian Water Buffalo Heifer that was parent-reared. The heifer has many similarities to CK, with both loving to play and wallow in mud, chase, bounce and run around with each other and even play spar.

This friendship was chosen specifically to teach CK important herd behaviours crucial to his reintroduction into a Rhino herd later in life.
