The NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) is calling on all residents of MIA District to join firefighters in preparing for the upcoming bush fire season.
RFS Superintendent Scott Connor said after years of wet weather, bush fires haven’t been front of mind for a lot of people.
“However, with that rain has come significant vegetation growth, and as conditions become drier and warmer this summer the threat of serious bush and grass fires is returning.
“Now is the time for residents to start thinking about what needs to be done to prepare their homes and families,” he said.
Recent RFS research found while 70 per cent of people say they have a bush fire plan, less than half have taken steps to prepare their property, and 62 per cent are unaware there are free RFS resources available to help them prepare.
Superintendent Connor said these findings reinforce the need for residents to act now.
"Emergency services will always do everything we can to protect communities, but every household also has a responsibility to be prepared."
Superintendent Connor highlighted five simple steps to reduce bush fire risk, such as clearing flammable materials from around your home and keeping lawns trimmed:
1. TRIM overhanging trees and shrubs.
2. MOW grass and remove the clippings, creating a cleared area around your home.
3. REMOVE flammable items that can burn around your home (e.g. door mats, wood piles, mulch)
4. CLEAR debris and leaves from the gutters surrounding your home.
5. PREPARE a sturdy hose or hoses that will reach all around your home.
