Given the extreme heat the region has experienced this summer, especially during the last week when temperatures soared into the 40s, parents have told me about some of their concerns.
Many have said that the blistering summer sun takes a toll, not only on their children, who sometimes spend hours in the searing sun’s rays and heat, but also on parents.
Although we might not have world-class facilities for juniors in the area, I’ve been under the impression that most grounds, ovals and sporting parks we have are at least adequate.
Some facilities have been upgraded in recent years.
But, some sporting arenas still lack ample shade, whether it be natural or artificial.
We do have an alternative of playing indoor sports in Australia, but it’s not the same as being out in the fresh air.
Cricket, the top sport in Australia, during the warmer months, doesn’t take a back seat in summer.
Hundreds of youngsters play cricket with the sun’s rays beating down on their backs this summer.
We are well aware of the protective methods available to reduce the risk of contracting skin cancer.
Wear a hat, apply sunscreen often and keep the fluid intake up and you never know, we might produce the next Don Bradman in our region.
I know there are a few politicians in the area who are keen to have sporting grounds and their facilities upgraded.
It might be the time for local sporting clubs to test some of the politicians’ mettle by lobbying them for upgraded facilities at their sporting arenas.
There are also many grants available for sporting clubs to apply for.
If your club’s ground or the facilities available there are not up to scratch, it could be the great time to approach councillors to see what they can do for you to allow your club members to enjoy a more pleasant experience.
