A self-guided walk around Grong Grong highlighting the businesses of yesteryear is a vision being pursued by a handful of residents.

The Grong Grong Historical Sign committee has been collecting information and old photographs on a list of businesses which traded in the main street during the early 20th century.

These included a bakery, hotel, saleyards, car garage, silos, wheat dump, police station and churches.

Committee spokesperson Kerryn Cassidy said the community had been surveyed on their ideas upon Narrandera Shire Council receiving a $40,000 grant for improvements in Grong Grong.

“The history signs came out as the favourite idea,” she said.

Mrs Cassidy said design concepts for the signs were gleaned during travel to Thargominda, Cunnamulla, Broken Hill and Wagga Wagga.

“We have sourced most of our historical information from the town book, internet and local families, and there will be historical photos and an information board at the site of each business.

“The idea is to have a large town map with the 22 sites marked on it plus basic information, supported by the other signs at the business locations.

“It will be an easy walk and encourages travellers to stay longer and spend money in Grong Grong.”

Among the businesses to be featured will be Atkinson and Powell stock agents, butcher shop, bakery, general store, Bank of NSW, Kennedy & Co stock agency, barber shop, pool hall, garage, café, school, silos and wheat dump, sports club, Royal Hotel, railway, saleyards, police station, Uniting Church, Anglican Church, Catholic church, recreation oval, hall, post office, service station, bush fire brigade and Grong Grong Mission.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year in time for the summer tourist season.
