Essential Energy crews were prepared for the impact of extreme heat across much of regional NSW this past week with very high temperatures increasing demand on the electricity network as homes and businesses used more power to stay cool.
Essential Energy’s crews monitored network conditions along with weather conditions to determine any measures needed to maintain network safety and reliability during extreme heat.
Its crews were on standby to respond quickly if any equipment failures occur. Where appropriate, additional crews may be deployed to support faster restoration.
To reduce community impact where possible, teams review any planned outages scheduled on its network on a daily basis. This review may result in changes to both the duration and timing of some outages, and in certain cases, postponement of non-critical works to assist communities in heatwave-affected areas.
All affected customers will be notified as soon as possible if this occurs, however, in some cases these changes or cancellations may not occur until the morning of the scheduled outage.
When scheduling outages, they balance the urgency of the work with the needs of the affected community. Postponing maintenance is considered only in exceptional circumstances due to the risk of equipment failure and potential for longer unplanned outages.
Customers can also help with simple energy-saving tips and ways to stay cool.
Tips regarding Energy efficiency and how to prepare for the extreme heat:
• During the day, keep heat out by closing doors, windows, blinds and curtains
• At night, let cooler air in by opening doors and windows
• Use fans and try to limit use of air conditioners as much as possible
• Adjust air conditioners to 24 degrees or warmer
• Keep fridges at five degrees and try to limit the number of times you open the door
• Switch off lights and appliances – to stop them generating heat as well as saving power
• If you rely on an electric pump for household water, make sure you have enough stored water in case of a power outage
• Plan for how you will manage during extreme heat, including possibly visiting family or friends with cooler homes or visit cooler public buildings
