The Narrandera women’s Australian football team (Eagles) has bounced back from its opening round loss against the Ganmain-Grong Grong-Matong Lions on February 1.

Last Friday night at Narrandera Sportsground, in the second round of the Southern NSW Women’s League competition, the Eagles defeated the Northern Jets in a low-scoring game.

The Eagles left it late to eventually emerge victorious, winning 1.5 (11) to 0.6 (6).

Always leading the opposition throughout the game, albeit narrowly, the Eagles kicked two behinds and held the Jets scoreless in the opening quarter.

They added another behind in the second quarter, but both teams went to the main break with the score resembling the result of a soccer match, locked at 3-3.

The third quarter saw the Eagles hit the front once again, retaking their slender lead by one point with a behind.

With both teams entering the final quarter with the game up for grabs and begging for someone to make a name for themselves as a game-changer - up stepped Milly Smith.

Milly slotted home the only goal of the entire game to secure the Eagles’ first win of the season.

Best players for the Eagles included Molly Darrington, Matilda Mahy, Paige Mathewson, Lucy Hickenbotham and Laura Grant.

In Round 3, the Eagles will face the Turvey Park Bulldogs, another team coming off a win in the previous round.

The bounce-up in another home game at Narrandera Sportsground tomorrow (Friday) is scheduled for 6.30pm.
