Coolamon Rovers have kept a hold of third spot in the Riverina League with a tense seven-point win over Wagga Tigers on a windy Saturday.
The 2019 Grand Final winners have a fight on their hands this season after falling just short of cementing a spot above the Rovers.
Coolamon had no answers for Wagga as they entered the second quarter 8-0 down. The Tigers kept their scoring going but their midfield and defence let up allowing Rovers to hit the lead going into the sheds at half-time.
The match continued to go back and forth with fans on the edge of their seats as Wagga re-took the lead in the third quarter this time by a point.
The pattern of the match continued however, with Coolamon racing in front right in the last minute with just one goal separating the two. Coolamon coach Mark Carroll believes because of the wind impacting the kicks the result could have gone either way.
“It wasn’t a flash day on Saturday it was really windy and turned into a real arm wrestle, there wasn’t any free-flowing football at all,” he said.
“I suppose we were just lucky to come out on top in the end it could probably go either way.
“We took our chances just a little bit better than theirs, they’ve got a very good team, they’ll be there or thereabouts when whips crack at the end of the season.
“We kicked four goals in the second quarter which got us over the line.”
Jeremiah Maslin has been a mainstay for Coolamon’s mid eld and Saturday was no exception putting in a good performance.
