Applications are now open for the Joyce Spencer Textiles Fellowship worth $4000 courtesy of the Cad Factory, Western Riverina Arts and the Spencer family.
Regional NSW based artists or artistled groups who are seeking financial support for textile-based projects with a public outcome in 2022 and 2023 are encouraged to apply.
Joyce Spencer (1928–2019) was an active artist and craft practitioner throughout her lifetime, creating a large body of artwork, teaching hundreds of workshops, and writing five bestselling books.
This initiative is aimed at supporting textile artists based in regional NSW to develop and present new work.
The fellowship is in honour of Joyce’s lifelong connection to regional living and regional making in both the Southern Highlands and Narrandera. Applications are open from now until midnight on July 18 2021. Head to www.cadfactory.com.au to start an application.
Llewellyn Tuckett, Joyce Spencer’s daughter, said the family were pleased to support the Joyce Spencer Textiles Fellowship again in this second and final year. “Mum would have been so proud to know her name is living on and supporting people to make excellent art; something she was absolutely passionate about,” Ms Tuckett said.
In 2020, the inaugural receipt of the Fellowship was Dr Treahna Hamm, whose artworks are composed with multiple layers of storytelling garnered from her Yorta Yorta upbringing by the Murray River in Northern Victoria and Southern NSW.
Dr Hamm said Joyce’s giving through knowledge, art and caring for community was exceptional in her life. “It is a gift beyond words,” she said. “In talking to people who knew Joyce, I see the meaning and guidance she gave to people through her creativity. Through conversations with Llewellyn, I thought about my own mother and family and the support I’ve been given. For me, receiving the Fellowship reinforces family within my creative life, which carries through every day of being an artist.”
Dr Hamm will be presenting a solo exhibition at Griffith Regional Art Gallery in 2022 that will travel to the Narrandera Arts Centre as an outcome of her Fellowship.
